Sustainability is currently a hot topic in the Kingdom and around the globe. The reason why is because countries, organizations and some of our average Joe’s realized that should we if we continue to conduct business the way we do. Our world as we know it will cease to exist in the long run. Future generations will not see nature the way we get to see it today.
The Kingdom launched the 2030 Vision to move away from predominately oil as the biggest contributor to the economy and initiated leap into the tourism industry. With the global 2030 vision in mind, the Kingdom initiated the most sustainable project known to mankind. It is of unheard proportions and a giant stride towards the Kingdom’s commitment towards a sustainable future.
With the global 2030 and the Kingdom’s 2030 vision, where does it leave us as the average human?
The simple answer is that – The global environmental damage is our doing and that of our forefathers. We wanted more, easier, bigger and better. The reason why this is outlined are to highlight the fact that we as individuals are responsible and accountable for the corrections that need to be made to ensure a future for earth and generations to come.
“The simple answer is that – The global environmental damage is our doing and that of our forefathers. We wanted more, easier, bigger and better”.
With that said, we as individuals collectively can make astronomical differences by just making small changes in our daily lives. It only takes personal commitment.
As an example, a 9000btu consumes approximately 800-900watts (0.9kwh) when running at full capacity. You can make a difference just by switching it off when the room is not in use or when you leave for work. Not only will you save money on electrical bills but also reduce carbon emissions. Less electricity used = less carbon emission by electricity generation. I know what you are thinking …… what change can I make if the saving is less than 200-300watts (0.3kwh), well it is an easy approach. If I start doing it and my neighbor (William) to my left is doing it and my neighbor (Javed) to my right is starting to do it, how much will the saving then be? Currently an estimated 231 000 families are residing in Saudi Arabia. If we all start by just switching off lights, air conditioners and heaters when not in use, the change can be astronomical and can be a stride to the benchmark of neutral carbon emissions.
Organizations also need to make changes in order to achieve the set goals and be responsible for the damage that is a direct effect from their operations. Changes like keeping sustainability in mind during the full life cycle of a project. Small changes can make huge differences.
Let us move away from being part of the destruction and become part of the rebuild solutions.
It only takes commitment, nothing more and nothing less. Take responsibility and start acting now to ensure your generations to come, can enjoy a beautiful earth like we are currently enjoying.
